Understanding the Different Approaches and How They Help
Life brings many challenges — stress, anxiety, relationship struggles, grief, low mood, or feeling stuck in patterns you want to change. Sometimes, talking things through with a trained professional is the most powerful step you can take towards feeling better, clearer, and more in control.
Counselling and psychotherapy offer safe, confidential spaces to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. While they share the same core goal — to support your emotional and mental wellbeing — there are different approaches, each designed to help in distinct ways. Below, we explain the most common forms, how they work, and how they can help you heal, grow, and thrive.
🤝 What is the Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
Although the terms are often used together, there is a subtle distinction:
- Counselling usually focuses on specific issues, current difficulties, or life changes. It tends to be shorter-term, helping you cope, find solutions, and develop strategies to manage how you feel right now.
- Psychotherapy often works more deeply, exploring underlying patterns, past experiences, and long-standing emotional difficulties or behaviours. It may be longer-term and helps bring about lasting change and self-understanding.
All the approaches below can be used in either counselling or psychotherapy, depending on your needs. We will always adapt the method to suit you.
🧠 Common Forms of Counselling & Psychotherapy
1. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
What it is:
CBT is one of the most well-known and widely researched approaches. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and actions are all connected — and that negative or unhelpful thinking and behaviour patterns can trap us in a cycle of distress. It is structured, practical, and focuses on the here and now.
How it works:
Together, we identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, challenge them, and replace them with more balanced, realistic, and positive ways of thinking and acting. You will learn tools and techniques you can use every day.
How it can help you:
- Highly effective for anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, and stress
- Helps manage anger, sleep problems, and obsessive-compulsive behaviours
- Gives you clear, actionable strategies to take control of your thoughts and reactions
- Helps you break free from cycles of worry or self-criticism
2. Person-Centred Therapy
What it is:
Developed by Carl Rogers, this approach believes that you are the expert on your own life, and that you have within you everything you need to grow and heal. The therapist does not give advice or tell you what to do — instead, they offer warmth, empathy, respect, and total acceptance, creating a safe space where you feel truly heard and understood.
How it works:
You lead the conversation, exploring whatever matters to you at your own pace. The therapist listens deeply, reflects back what they hear, and helps you clarify your feelings. This non-judgemental environment helps you trust yourself, understand your emotions, and make choices that feel right for you.
How it can help you:
- Ideal if you feel unheard, misunderstood, or unsure of who you are or what you want
- Helps with low self-esteem, relationship issues, grief, and general unhappiness
- Builds confidence, self-worth, and the ability to trust your own judgement
- Supports you through life changes, confusion, or emotional pain
3. Psychodynamic Therapy
What it is:
This approach explores how your past experiences, childhood, and early relationships shape how you feel, think, and behave today. It works on the understanding that many of our feelings, motivations, and difficulties come from the unconscious mind — things we are not fully aware of, but which influence our lives deeply.
How it works:
We look at patterns in your life and relationships, and explore how past events may be affecting how you feel or react now. By bringing these hidden feelings and memories into the open, you gain insight into why things are happening, which helps you let go of old hurts and change patterns that no longer serve you.
How it can help you:
- Excellent for long-term difficulties, repeated relationship problems, or feelings that have been with you for years
- Helps with deep-seated anxiety, depression, trauma, or feelings of emptiness
- Helps you understand yourself fully and resolve issues that feel hard to explain
- Brings lasting change by healing the root cause, not just the symptoms
4. Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)
What it is:
CAT is a unique blend of ideas from CBT and psychodynamic therapy. It is collaborative and time-limited, designed to help you understand how you learned to relate to yourself and others, and how patterns from the past keep repeating in your life today.
How it works:
We work together to map out your difficulties, identify recurring patterns (for example: always putting others first, or avoiding conflict), and understand where these patterns came from. We then help you find new, healthier ways of relating to yourself and the world around you.
How it can help you:
- Perfect if you feel stuck in the same difficult situations or relationships again and again
- Helps with complex emotional problems, borderline personality traits, or self-harm thoughts
- Helps you break cycles of behaviour and build better, more satisfying relationships
- Clear, structured, and focuses on active change
5. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
What it is:
This is a practical, goal-oriented approach that focuses entirely on the future and on solutions, rather than analysing the past or the problem in depth. It believes you already have the strengths and resources you need to make changes — you just need help finding and using them.
How it works:
We talk about what you want to be different, what is already working well, and what small steps you can take to move towards what you want. We use questions to help you imagine a better future and find ways to make that happen quickly.
How it can help you:
- Great for specific problems, life transitions, work stress, or family conflict
- Fast and effective — often brings positive change in just a few sessions
- Helps you focus on what you can do, rather than what is wrong
- Builds confidence and motivation to make changes
6. Gestalt Therapy
What it is:
Gestalt means “whole” — this approach focuses on you as a whole person: your mind, body, emotions, and behaviour, all connected. It focuses on what is happening in the moment, rather than talking about past events. It helps you become more aware of what you are feeling and doing right now, so you can take responsibility and make conscious choices.
How it works:
We explore your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations as they arise. You may be invited to act out situations, express feelings you have been holding back, or notice how you interact with others. It is active, creative, and helps you become more authentic and present.
How it can help you:
- Helps you reconnect with yourself, your feelings, and your needs
- Excellent for self-awareness, personal growth, and overcoming creative blocks
- Helps resolve unfinished business, regrets, or feelings you have pushed away
- Helps you live more fully and authentically
7. Integrative Therapy
What it is:
This is not a single method, but an approach that combines ideas and techniques from all the different therapies above. No single way works for everyone, so integrative therapists tailor the work to you — your personality, your history, and what you need.
How it works:
We draw from different approaches as needed: using CBT tools for anxiety, person-centred listening when you need to be heard, or psychodynamic exploration when we need to look deeper. The work is flexible and entirely personalised.
How it can help you:
- The most flexible and adaptable form of support
- Suitable for almost every type of difficulty or goal
- Ensures the therapy fits you, rather than you fitting the therapy
- Perfect if you are unsure exactly what you need or want a mix of support

📋 What Happens in Your First Session?
It is completely normal to feel nervous or unsure before your first appointment. To help you feel at ease, here is exactly what you can expect:
- A safe, confidential space: We will meet in a private, quiet room where you can speak freely. Everything you say stays between us — confidentiality is our foundation.
- Getting to know each other: We will start by introducing ourselves and explaining how we work. I will ask you some questions about your background, what has brought you here, and what you hope to get from our sessions. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers.
- You are in control: You never have to talk about anything you do not want to. You can take your time, pause, or change the subject whenever you like. We will only go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
- Clarifying goals: We will talk about what you want to change or understand better. This helps us decide together which approach will suit you best and roughly how long we might work together.
- Questions are welcome: You can ask me anything — about my experience, how therapy works, or any worries you have. This is your space.
By the end of the session, most people say they already feel a little lighter, simply from sharing what has been on their mind.
❌ Common Myths vs. ✅ The Facts
There are many misunderstandings about counselling and psychotherapy. We want to clear them up so you can feel confident about reaching out.
Myth: “Only ‘crazy’ or ‘weak’ people go to therapy.”
✅ Fact: Therapy is for anyone who is human. Just as you visit a doctor for a physical illness or a dentist for your teeth, therapy is simply support for your emotional and mental health. It takes great strength and courage to recognise when you need help and to do something about it. Many people come when life is good, but they want to understand themselves better or grow personally.
Myth: “The therapist will just tell me what to do.”
✅ Fact: Good therapists do not give advice or tell you how to live your life. Instead, we help you think things through, see things clearly, and find the answers that are right for you. You are the expert on your own life — we are here to help you find your own way forward.
Myth: “I’ll have to lie on a couch and talk about my childhood for hours.”
✅ Fact: This is an old stereotype! You will sit in a comfortable chair, face-to-face. While sometimes we may look at how your past affects you today, many approaches focus mostly on the here and now and your future. We only explore what is relevant and helpful to you.
Myth: “It takes years and years to work.”
✅ Fact: Not always. Some difficulties are resolved in just 4–6 sessions. Others may take longer, but you will usually notice positive changes in how you feel and think quite early on. We will regularly review how things are going so you are always in control of how long we work together.
Myth: “Nothing can help me — my problems are too big.”
✅ Fact: When you are in pain or distress, it is easy to feel this way. But human beings have an incredible natural ability to heal and grow, given the right support. We have helped many people who felt exactly the same way, and found a way through. You do not have to carry it all alone.
