What to Expect from Your First Massage at Banyan

Booking your first massage can feel a little nerve-wracking — and that’s completely normal. Whether you’re not sure what to wear, worried about privacy, or simply don’t know what happens when you walk through the door, this guide will walk you through everything so you can arrive feeling calm and confident.

Arriving at Banyan

When you arrive at our centre on Manchester Road, you’ll be warmly welcomed and shown to a comfortable waiting area. We’ll take a few minutes to go through a simple consultation form before your session begins — this helps your therapist understand your health history, any areas of concern, and what you’re hoping to get out of the treatment.

This isn’t just admin — it’s the start of your therapist tailoring the session specifically to you. Please be honest about any injuries, medical conditions, or areas you’d prefer not to have worked on. Nothing is too small to mention.

Privacy and Getting Comfortable

You’ll be given complete privacy to undress to your comfort level and get onto the massage table, which will be warm and ready for you. You’ll be covered with a sheet or towel at all times — only the area being worked on is ever uncovered. Your modesty is always respected, without exception.

Not sure what to wear underneath? For most massage treatments, underwear is fine. Your therapist will let you know beforehand if anything specific is needed.

During the Massage

Your therapist will check in with you on pressure — too light, too firm, just right. Please speak up if anything doesn’t feel comfortable. Good massage is a conversation, not something that’s done to you. There’s no obligation to talk beyond that — many clients drift off to sleep, and that’s perfectly welcome.

The room will be quiet, warm, and softly lit. We use quality oils suited to your skin, and the music (if any) is chosen to help you relax rather than distract.

After Your Session

Don’t rush to jump up straight away. Take a moment, have a glass of water, and let yourself come back to the room gently. It’s normal to feel deeply relaxed — some people feel a little sleepy for the rest of the day, and that’s your body doing exactly what it should.

Occasionally, people experience mild muscle tenderness the day after — similar to the feeling after a good stretch or workout. This is nothing to worry about and usually passes within 24–48 hours. Drinking plenty of water afterwards helps.
